MeVEA Ltd and Faktia (Forssa Finland Adult Education Center) have signed a contract for MeVEA to deliver a crane simulator to support training and develop education at the center. The simulator is designed, developed and manufactured in co-operation with the training center and it will be delivered by the end of 2010. The project has clear benefits for both parties. Faktia provides expertise and experience from the crane industry with an educational point of view. MeVEA is an expert in real-time simulation of dynamics and manufacturing simulators. Objectives for the project are set to a high level.

A construction simulation environment will be developed which can be used for both, mobile- and tower crane operator training. The training simulator reflects accurately features of a real crane and offers a immersive and versatile training environment. The simulator is designed to enable basic training as as advanced training with difficult and dangerous situations. A great advantage of a simulator is that the trainee can be put to his limits without personnel or machinery damages. Naturally no fuel costs occure either. Weather conditions such as wind and rain can be managed by the instructor.

Frank W. Harris (inventor of Immersion Vision) launches a new product site for his product.

Immersion Vision is an amazing imaging system that captures a 360 degree field of view horizontally and 240 degrees vertically and then displays these images on a screen that immerses the viewer. Immersion Vision captures the images traditionally onto a flat plane; there is no stitching together of images required, and no algorithms are needed to correct image distortion. The image physically captured by the lens is the same image displayed on the immersive viewing screen, no manipulation of the image is needed. The capture and re-display of the image with this system results in the viewer receiving a uniform density of image across the entire field of view.

Simulation technology allows for the military to understand all possible scenarios and outcomes before stepping foot onto the battlefield. With an increasing number of troops overseas, the need for situational training has becomes greater and greater. Not only does the soldier need to know how to respond to an emergency situation such as a nuclear or biological attack, they also need to have training in social, cultural and behavioural situations as troops continue to interact with foreigners on a day-to-day basis.

Cogent3D Symmetry LogoTucson, AZ May, 2010 – Cogent3D, Inc., today announced that Symmetry™, a database conversion and SAF publishing tool for modeling and simulation, now comes in a lower cost version, for those who only want to take apart their static terrain formats to make correlated GIS data.

Symmetry is a fast, easy-to-use, cost effective tool that helps its users recover the labor invested in preparing simulation terrain by converting it into GIS source formats to be reused in new products with any terrain tools. Symmetry also provides an answer to the challenge of correlating existing terrains with new terrains, e.g., existing SAF terrain with a new visual terrain.

CrunchGear writes about their visit to Ford:

Ford, like most modern manufacturing companies, is utilizing virtual reality tools at all levels of development. Gone are the days of designers and engineers hunching over drafting tables in a smoke-filled room, working on blueprints for what will next be molded out of clay.

These days development is done on 20-foot ultra-high resolution displays with real world testing done in a virtual world. Designers can experience nearly every aspect of a future vehicle before any physical piece is constructed. Ford even employs virtual tools for the manufacturing phase to maximize efficiency there as well.

I recently got a close look at a bunch of these tools and processes. I was granted access to everything from Ford’s gigantic full vehicle motion simulator to the gigantic video wall. These are some impressive toys.
