U.S. Army Launches Game Technology Project Office
According to a report in the Training & Simulation Journal, the U.S. Army has recently created a new project office dedicated to training games, integrating video game graphics and technology into tactical simulators for military use.
Colonel Jack Millar, director of the Army's Training and Doctrine Command's Project Office for Gaming, told the TSJ that despite a proliferation of military-themed games, current console titles don't address the Army's training needs. "I haven’t seen a game built for the entertainment industry that fills a training gap," he said.

Quote: "Using the infrared camera in the Wii remote and a head mounted sensor bar (two IR LEDs), you can accurately track the location of your head and render view dependent images on the screen. This effectively transforms your display into a portal to a virtual environment. The display properly reacts to head and body movement as if it were a real window creating a realistic illusion of depth and space."
Wiiremote hacker Johnny Chung Lee uses the cheap Wiiremote to build a desktop head tracking system.

We have managed to find more details on Microsoft's serious flight simulation product ESP on an MSDN blog.
Quote: By that, I mean ESP is a separately versioned, side-by-side application. With an SDK that targets that separately versioned, side-by-side application.
And issues like:
1) Branding ( being brand neutral ),
2) EULA ( licensed for commercial purposes that are expressly forbidden in the FSX consumer EULA ), and
3) IP ( commercial reship rights for all content )
taken care of for the commercial customer to take the platform, add their solution, and ship it in volume.

Microsoft has announced a new platform for visual simulation. The press release mentions exclusively flight training among others. The product is probably a derivative of the MS's Flight Simulator X.
REDMOND, Wash., Nov. 14 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Microsoft Corp. today announced plans for a new visual-simulation platform, Microsoft ESP, available in January 2008. Microsoft ESP enables the innovative use of visual simulation for immersive learning and decision-making, supports PC-based commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware and software, and enables simulations to be built faster and more cost-effectively. Simulations built on the Microsoft ESP platform will help government, commercial and academic organizations apply immersive games-based technology and interactive learning experiences to improve work-force readiness and increase operational excellence.

seriousgamessource.com published an interesting article discussing the serious games movement.
In this impassioned opinion piece, PIXELearning CEO Kevin Corti discusses the nature of the 'serious games' movement, suggesting that the fragmented nature of the sector, which includes games for education, business, health, and military uses, is adversely affecting business.
"I’ve been motivated to pen this article by a long-standing observation born from being involved with numerous initiatives, groups and associations over the last five years, from attending numerous Serious Games and related events (many of which I have spoken at) and from amassing a very large collection of reference material, articles and publications about Serious Games.

Five years ago, the U.S. Army launched America's Army, a free first-person-shooter (FPS) computer game based on the Army itself. It received solid reviews, and has been through multiple permutations, including retail versions for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox. A new Xbox 360 America's Army game, True Soldiers, ships later this fall.
The Army is now bringing its video game series out of the PC and console and to virtual reality with the Virtual Army Experience. America's Army: VAE is a traveling exhibit presented by the U.S. Army that lets people get a dose of VR combat through the America's Army: Special Forces (Overmatch) video game. At Digital Life, I got a chance to try the Virtual Army Experience for myself.

Serious Games has become a high profile term, however what constitutes a serious game, what different genres exist, what is their value to organisations, trainers and learners' Isn't it about time we took a practical, pragmatic and research based view on the usefulness of this technology to the learning landscape.
This seminar will set the scene, give clear academic rigour to the area, including pedagogical relevance, and with delegate input and practical case studies show examples and identify opportunities.

WashingtonTimes reports an interesting case from China.
Xiaodong Sheldon Meng, 42, a former Beijing resident, pleaded guilty Aug. 1 in California to illegally providing China's military with embargoed software used in air force and navy training.
Prosecutors said Meng violated arms export control laws by selling China's military what is called "viXsen" source code, a Quantum3D product controlled for export as a defense article. The software is used in "visual simulation software program used for training military fighter pilots."
Meng also illegally installed a copy of Quantum3D's "Mantis" simulation software on a Chinese navy site and altered the code to make it appear as though it belonged to a competitor. The software was part of a sales demonstration project for the Chinese produced by Meng.
