Microsoft responded to rumors.

Quote: "Regarding the future of Flight Simulator, all we're announcing at this time is that we are committed to flying games," said a Microsoft spokeswoman via e-mail. "You should expect us to continue to invest in enabling great LIVE experiences on Windows, including flying games, but we have nothing to announce around Flight Simulator specifically at this time."

The comment is confusing. It doesn't only call Microsoft Flight Simulator a "flying game" but also throws in the MS buzzword LIVE, which make us think: they have got no resources and intention keep the flight simulator team but they want to port it to browser ?

It looks like the complete Microsoft Flight Simulation team is being laid off. The product was 26 years old and had a loyal customer base and a huge aftermarket.

In the recent years, several defense contractors have also jumped onto the MS FS wagon taking advantage of this cheap but extensible flight sim. software. There are even companies who are building flight simulators and trainers based on Microsoft Flight Simulator. The business model of building simulators on top of MS FS always seemed attractive but the risk was obvious: outsourcing core business is not a good idea. The Flight Simulator has never been an important business unit in the world of Microsoft due to the tiny market in comparison to their other businesses like office and XBox.

Boston – December 11, 2008 – OutStart plans to implement its OutStart LCMS (learning content management system) software as part of a global project to help Canada’s Air Force transform its training operations. The project, called AFIILE (Air Force Integrated Information and Learning Environment), is led by prime contractor CAE and enlists OutStart, xwave, and other companies to help Canada’s Air Force build a military training environment that will meet current and future requirements. AFIILE offers an integrated suite of software applications that users can access to develop, manage and deliver training content across the enterprise.

“There’s a proliferation of training and information systems within the Canadian Air Force, and training content is not widely accessible between one air force school and another. AFIILE will provide our men and women with an environment in which to share mission-critical content,” says Major Denis Forest of the Directorate Air Force Programs. “An LCMS allows us to marshal all of our training resources to be far more agile in terms of where and how we train our personnel. We feel the LCMS will be a catalyst for increasing a learner’s time on task and enabling our people to do their jobs faster and better, since they’ll no longer be tied to any single type of instruction.”
